There’s a certain kind of morning that can only happen in the Upper Peninsula in the springtime, and if you’re anywhere near St. Ignace, the chances are pretty good for you to experience it yourself.
This is when the lake is still, and downtown streets are silent in that “just before the season starts” sort of way. Most mornings this time of year, you can grab a coffee without ever waiting in line, then you can enjoy shops that have just opened for the year, giving you a rare sneak peek into the busy season yet to come.
As the weather warms up, it’s time to find the best home-base. Located right at the northern end of the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, there’s much to love about a stay in St. Ignace.
Here, you can be right on the water, you can book a downtown boutique hotel, or you can even keep it simple with a convenient and budget-friendly option. Take a look at what’s available and lock in your stay:
The First Big Weekends of the Year
There are a few weekends in May and early June when this quiet little town wakes up to family-friendly fun. Jeep the Mac kicks things off in early May, Memorial Day weekend brings the Native American Festival, and by June, Bronco the Mac finishes out the season with a bridge crossing and community gathering like no other.
Jeep the Mac
For the past decade, Jeep fans have been showing up in St. Ignace every spring, some as regulars and many as first-timers. In 2026, the bridge crossing is back, so visitors can have the full Jeep the Mac experience.
From there, the celebration rolls into downtown St. Ignace as participants and spectators await the Jeep Lights Parade where decorated and lit-up Jeeps parade through a predetermined downtown route. It’s a yearly favorite: people line the sidewalks, waving as each Jeep rolls through, some simple, others fully decked out.
The Jeep traces its roots back to World War II as a rugged, all-purpose military vehicle built for tough terrain. Over time, it evolved into a civilian icon known for off-road capability and open-road adventure. This year’s 85th anniversary brings an extra layer of celebration to an already high-energy weekend.
Native American Festival
Taking place downtown on the grounds of the Museum of Ojibwa Culture, the Native American Festival in St. Ignace is all about living culture that is shared, celebrated, and still very much here.
The festival features drumming, dancing, storytelling, and traditional art, all rooted in generations of cultural practice.
Visitors come for the live performances and stay for the details: handmade crafts, food worth going back for, and hands-on workshops where you can learn something real and take it with you.
It’s an open-to-everyone, easy weekend where you can show up, wander around, and take it all in. Admission is free.
Bronco the Mac
As spring marches on, St. Ignace shifts into gear for Bronco the Mac. This is the one where Ford Bronco drivers cross the Mackinac Bridge in unison before heading into St. Ignace (and beyond) for organized trail rides and off-road routes.
The weekend includes a downtown gathering where participants line up in a display that includes just about every model of Ford Bronco to roll off an assembly line in the last 60 years, from vintage 1966 first editions to brand-new examples and everything in-between. Spectators move between Broncos, vendors, and entertainment in a fun event that stretches across the whole community.
Mother's Day in St. Ignace
St. Ignace makes it easy to find something she’ll love! Choose a fresh, seasonal bouquet from St. Ignace in Bloom (pre-orders take the guesswork away). Stop into the Original Murdick’s Fudge for a sweet gift, then wander the downtown shops until something feels just right.
When the big day arrives and it’s time to relax, slow things down with brunch at Johnnie’s on 2, Wild Blueberry Breakfast & Bakery, or follow your bliss and try somewhere completely new.
