First thing, you hear it. In the distance, the engines rumbling, purring, laughing (in Jeep)…and then you realize: something a little bit wild is about to go down. (In a good way!)

Yes, if it’s spring, that means Jeep season has arrived in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. For Jeep fans, this weekend is all about the ride; the freedom of raw horsepower and the muddy road ahead, as well as the fun and unique sense of camaraderie that is inherent to the Jeep Community.

Jeep the Mac has grown into one of those events that is both showcase and playground at the same time. Better yet, it includes a group crossing of the Mackinac Bridge as one of the signature moments and opener of the weekend where the energy is always the same: go out, explore, and don’t be precious about the puddles!

Celebrating 85 Years of Jeep Adventures

This year marks 85 years of the Jeep. It all began in the early 1940s when the U.S. Army commissioned a “light reconnaissance vehicle” that could handle a wide range of wartime demands during WWII. Those early wunderkinds earned a reputation for being tough, adaptable, and ready for just about anything.

The name “Jeep” is often traced back to the military term “GP,” short for “general purpose,” used to describe early utility vehicles built for wartime work. When Jeeps hit the civilian market, they became something even bigger. Jeep has grown into an international symbol of adaptability, and of “sure, let’s try that trail and see what happens.”

That adaptable mindset shows up everywhere in St. Ignace during Jeep the Mac weekend. You see it in restored classics just as much as in the meticulous modern rigs, and especially in the confidence of people who know exactly what their vehicle can handle.

The celebration doesn’t stop there, St. Ignace will carry that energy into a special 85th birthday event for Jeep later this summer on July 31 and August 1.

Bridge to Backwoods

Crossing the Mackinac Bridge as part of Jeep the Mac is a moment that feels almost unreal. Think about rolling across one of the most recognizable spans in the country with a line of Jeeps stretching as far as the eye can see…

From there, the weekend opens up into everything the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula does best with a huge dose of small-town charm

What to expect at Jeep the Mac:

  • Off-road trail rides and group adventures
  • A full obstacle course experience
  • Vendor areas packed with specialty finds
  • Food trucks offering epic eats
  • Live music to keep things moving and grooving

Jeep Weekend in Full Gear

Even if you don’t register for the Jeep the Mac, it’s fun to visit St. Ignace to enjoy during the time of the event. Spend a few minutes walking around downtown, and you’ll thrill at the many different types of Jeep: vintage restorations, lifted builds, minimalist setups, experimental rigs, and even a few that might make you pause and say “hmmm”.

Interested in participating? Registration usually covers access to all experiences, the bridge crossing, plus food and drink vouchers and a souvenir to remember the adventure by. Keep in mind that there is no on-site registration, and the deadline to register for 2026 Jeep the Mac in 2026 is April 24.

For registered participants, a lot of the post-crossing fun occurs at Kewadin Casinos, which becomes a hub for obstacle courses and gatherings. Past events have included an off-road excursion on Drummond Island. This is not part of the 2026 schedule, though the island is still accessible by ferry from DeTour Village..

Then, Saturday evening around 9:30 pm, St. Ignace hosts something anyone and everyone can enjoy: the Jeep Lights Parade. Spectators line the sidewalks to see custom builds, lit-up rigs, and a genuine display of personality. It’s a little bit spectacular, a little bit traditional, and completely St. Ignace!

More Than just a Weekend

Whether you come for the bridge, the trails, or just the feeling of a season finally shifting, Jeep weekend in St. Ignace delivers something you can’t quite replicate anywhere else. And, really, this is a weekend worth staying for, with plenty to explore beyond the open road.

From nearby ATV and ORV routes to the lakeshore and inland trails, the area is built for getting out and moving around in every direction. You can also hop a ferry to Mackinac Island and turn the weekend into something even bigger.

So when the season rolls in, consider this your sign:
