Castle Rock Trail
This trailhead offers direct access to the North Country National Scenic Trail’s eastern Upper Peninsula corridor. Rather than leading to a lookout, it serves as a gateway for day hikes or longer backpacking trips. From here, hikers can explore peaceful forested stretches, cross shallow stream crossings, and continue toward Trout Brook Pond or Straits State Park. Portions of the historic rail grade and Niagara Escarpment are also visible along the route.
Trail Highlights & Connections
Access to multiple NCT segments: Hike east toward Brevort Lake Road (8.8 mi one way) or west toward Straits State Park/boardwalk in St. Ignace (5 mi).
Mixed terrain: Traverse pine-hardwood forests, wetland edges, and ancient escarpment ridges.
Natural landmarks: Expect small stream crossings, dunes, and boardwalk sections overlooking wildlife habitat.
Scenic vistas: Casual glimpses of Niagara Escarpment and occasional Kent-relief views, though no dramatic overlooks like the bluff version .
