The Huron Boardwalk
This trail is the center of it all. The Huron Boardwalk ties much of the downtown waterfront together. Stretching along Lake Huron through downtown St. Ignace, the pathway connects parks, marinas, restaurants, museums, beaches, and shoreline gathering spaces into one long waterfront walk.
Benches overlook Moran Bay with some fabulous views of Mackinac Island, and you’ll discover informative historical placards along the route that share stories of Great Lakes shipping, maritime history, and tell about aspects of life around the Straits of Mackinac.
The boardwalk is also part of the larger North Country Trail system, which is one of the longest scenic trails in the entire country. Hikers and explorers can pick up the trail along the waterfront, near the St. Ignace Welcome Center at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge, or at the trail at Little Bears East Arena & Community Center. From there, it continues into the forests and shoreline landscapes of the eastern Upper Peninsula.
The Huron Boardwalk is one of the easiest ways to experience changing seasons on the waterfront.
During busy summer weekends, the trail and nearby parks host everything from live music and farmers markets to car shows, festivals, and more community events beside the bay.

Waterfront Parks in St. Ignace
The waterfront parks in St. Ignace each offer a different way to experience the shoreline—from active gathering spaces to quieter stretches of beach and green space along Lake Huron.
Wawatam Park and Lighthouse
The Wawatam Park and Lighthouse are located at the end of the St. Ignace boardwalk in Chief Wawatam Park. It has become one of the most recognizable gathering spaces in town.
Originally part of a welcome center in Monroe, Michigan, the namesake lighthouse was moved and re-lit in St. Ignace on August 20, 2006. Its location just off the main road makes it super easy to reach, and once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Huron and beyond.
The park encompasses the pier and the summer splash pad where families gather during the summer season, especially during those long, warm afternoons. There are planned upgrades and improvements to the splash pad area during the summer of 2026, so keep checking back in as the season progresses.
There’s open green space, shoreline seating, and easy access to downtown dining and shopping. Throughout the summer, visitors gather here for fireworks, waterfront festivals, live music, and community events while ferries and boats continue moving through the harbor nearby.
American Legion Park
American Legion Park brings both recreation and waterfront relaxation together along the shoreline.
The park has seen major updates in recent years. Today, it includes a popular playground, volleyball courts, covered picnic pavilions, public restrooms, an open green space, and benches throughout.
During the summer season, the American Legion Park becomes a hub for downtown events such as live music, festivals, fireworks, drone shows, and community gatherings.
After you’re done exploring here, the location of the American Legion Park makes it easy to continue along the entire boardwalk and surrounding waterfront areas without needing to move your vehicle.

Kiwanis Beach
At Kiwanis Beach, find the quieter side of the St. Ignace waterfront experience. Even during busy summer weekends, Kiwanis Beach is one of those places where the bustle of downtown and serene spots on the lakeshore meet naturally.
Located along Moran Bay and connected directly to the Huron Boardwalk, the beach gives visitors an easy place to slow down beside the water without ever really leaving downtown behind. There’s a sandy swimming area, open shoreline views across Lake Huron, and plenty of space to sit with a picnic, search for stones, or simply watch the ferries as they head to or from Mackinac Island.
The shoreline holds deep historical significance. Indigenous communities used this shoreline for generations, and in 1671 Father Marquette established a mission nearby. The Museum of Ojibwa Culture located just across the street from Kiwanis Park helps to preserve and share that history, and more.
Get Active at Dock #3 Park
When you want to play, Dock #3 Park is the place to be. The park is located in a scenic area of the downtown waterfront that attracts families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts. One of the park’s most popular features is its fishing pier.
Adjacent to the fishing pier, Dock #3 Park has a boat launch that provides access to the area’s waterways, allowing you to fish, explore nearby coves, or simply take in the amazing sights. Families with children will appreciate the playground here. Additionally, the park includes a basketball court, so grab a ball and come on over!
Throughout the Dock #3 Park, interpretive signs provide fascinating insights into the history of the area. These signs offer a glimpse into the region’s past, making a visit both enjoyable and educational.
On-the-Water Activities
The St. Ignace Marina offers access points to the area’s on-the-water activities in a convenient downtown location. The marina serves as one of the main hubs for boating activity in the area. It’s one of the larger marinas in the eastern Upper Peninsula, with 136 slips that serve sailboats, fishing boats, transient cruisers, and Great Lakes travelers.
Kayaking, Paddleboarding, and Paddling the Bay
Local waterways attract kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders throughout the warmer months. Paddlers can explore the shoreline directly from downtown while enjoying views of the marina, ferries, waterfront parks, and the surrounding bay from the water itself.
Area companies offer kayaks, tandem kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, hydro bikes, and additional waterfront rentals for visitors looking to spend time on the water. Some guided experiences even include sunset paddles and excursions beneath the Mackinac Bridge.

Shipwreck Diving in the Straits
The waters surrounding St. Ignace are well known for historic shipwreck diving within the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Preserve. The area has shipwrecks that are remarkably preserved in the cold, clear Great Lakes water.
Dive charters operating from St. Ignace provide access to wreck sites ranging from beginner-friendly dives to deeper technical explorations, as well as other fun area dives.
Fishing Along the Waterfront
Fishing is always part of the waterfront culture throughout the area. Depending on the season, properly-licensed anglers can cast from shoreline areas, marina docks, or launching boats into the Straits and nearby waters. Whitefish, salmon, trout, perch, and other Great Lakes species continue drawing both recreational and charter fishing activity throughout the year.
