Visit the Wawatam Lighthouse

Exploring downtown St. Ignace is a delight, especially when you consider its walkability. Just a short shuffle from the city’s downtown beaches, you’ll discover the Wawatam Lighthouse—a striking white and red beacon with a story as unique as its design.

Originally part of a welcome center in Monroe, Michigan, the lighthouse was moved and re-lit in St. Ignace on August 20, 2006. Its location just off the main road makes it super easy to reach, and once you get there, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Lake Huron and beyond.

The Chief Wawatam Park

The Chief Wawatam Park offers a variety of interactive activities that appeal to both kids and adults. The splash pad is a popular spot to cool off, with water jets bubbling from the concrete surface and a fountain misting all who come near. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck from the designated platform, while the human sundial provides a fun and unusual way to check the time.

We think that a stroll to the lighthouse is the perfect way to wrap up your day in St. Ignace. We have heard that many visitors find it the perfect spot to unwind after dining at the Village Inn, which is just across the street. Some have been known to top off their visit with ice cream from the nearby Mackinac Double Decker.

Sandy Splendor at Brevort Beach

When you visit St. Ignace, don’t miss the short day trip to Brevort Beach, located 15 miles to the west. As you drive along scenic US 2, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the Mackinac Bridge and Lake Michigan that really cannot be beat.

The Sandy shores of the Brevort Sand Dunes Beach invites leisurely walks, sandcastle building, and smiles. The clear turquoise waters are perfect for a refreshing dip. Pack a picnic, bring a comfy towel, and don’t forget your favorite book for a perfect beach day. The stunning scenery also makes it a favorite spot for photographers, and with scenes like these, you may just snap an award-winner!

While you’re in the area, check out the Lake Michigan Sand Dunes along US2, and for a truly unforgettable experience, watch the sunrise (or sunset) over the dunes!
