Jeep the Yoop: Off-Roading, Community, and Upper Peninsula Charm

Every year, Jeep lovers roll into St. Ignace for a fun weekend of trail rides, obstacle courses, and for a unique chance to mingle with others in the Jeep community. This is Jeep the Yoop, a much-loved event that is a bit of a showcase and a bit of an off-road adventure.

But most importantly, it’s the shared thrill of owning a Jeep. Some years, that thrill kicks off with a parade across the Mackinac Bridge; other years, it stays firmly on the Upper Peninsula side. When bridge crossing isn’t on the schedule, the spotlight shifts to “Jeep the Yoop,” where the same passionate crowd takes on rugged trails, mud-splattered obstacle courses, and there’s plenty of that unmistakable Upper Peninsula spirit.

From Blacktop to the Backwoods: What to Expect at Jeep the Yoop

No matter the year or the route, Jeep the Yoop is an immersive experience full of downright fun! Participate in a full-scale obstacle course at Kewadin Casino, and in off-road adventures on Drummond Island (ferry rides are included in the ticket price!).

Explore vendor villages stocked with goods, enjoy food trucks dishing up tasty bites, and groove to live music that keeps the energy high, while serious modders can geek out on all the creativity.

As the weekend winds down, the Jeep Lights Parade lights up downtown St. Ignace. Registration usually covers access to all these experiences plus food and drink vouchers and a souvenir to remember the adventure by.

What’s more, the Grand-Stand event is a total blast, where tricked-out Jeeps steal the spotlight! And you won’t want to miss the St. Ignace Jeep Lights Parade, where personalized rides compete for top prizes.

But beyond all the gear and all the mud, Jeep the Mac is about the people, about those stories swapped around campfires, trails tackled side by side.

“Jeep people just get it,” declared a longtime participant. “We’re all here for the same reason: to take on something new and have a good time doing it.”

A Culture Built on History, Ingenuity, and Community

We caught up with another Jeep owner from the Soo who’s been part of the scene for decades. His journey began with a ’79 Cherokee, and eventually led to restoring the 1943 Willys he brought to the event:

“According to General Eisenhower, the Jeep was one of the three things that won World War II. The others were the Higgins boat and the landing craft. Since then, Jeeps have just kept getting better.”

He described the Jeep community as one built on creativity and camaraderie:

“Like Harleys, everybody’s got different ideas. You see all kinds of builds up here — some great, some wild, some maybe not for you — but it’s inspiring either way. You learn just by walking around and talking to people.”

And that familiar Jeep grill? He shared a fun fact that we hadn’t heard before:

“I just learned that the seven-slot grill represents the seven continents Jeeps have been on. And when you think about it, it’s true — Jeeps are everywhere.”

Then, we chatted with a representative from the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau, who summed up the appeal of Jeep the Yoop perfectly:

“It’s really fun! There’s tons of activities, casino packages, and deals to enjoy while you’re in St. Ignace.”

Her favorite part? “Heading out to Drummond Island for off-roading!” She went on to indicate what people love about Jeep the Yoop: “There are after-parties, awards, and all kinds of cool stuff. It’s a great way to kick off the jeeping season and hang out with friends up north in the Upper Peninsula.”

Registering for Jeep the Yoop opens the door to a whole world of excitement. A ticket includes exclusive access to the Jeep Obstacle Course at Kewadin Casino, food and drink vouchers from event tasty food trucks, ferry fare to Drummond Island, and
