Fort De Buade Museum

Fort De Buade Museum

Museum is closed to visitors for the 2021 season.  Museum Store is open Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm through Labor Day.  Visit www.michmackhs.org for information as we transition to the Straits Cultural Center.

Fort de Buade Museum, operated by the Michilimackinac Historical Society, is named for the first French Fort on the Straits of Mackinac. The history of the Straits region is presented through a unique collection of artifacts. Although the Fort de Buade Museum is closed for the 2021 season, staff and volunteers are working hard behind the scenes caring for our collection. We are digitizing and packing items so that they are ready for our eventual move to the future Straits Cultural Center at 20 S. State Street.

Collection highlights include the Newberry Tablet, Native American beadwork, a 15th-century cauldron used by French fur traders, a Hacker Martin flintlock pistol, and a set of snowshoes worn by a horse. In addition to the historic objects, the museum houses an archival collection of postcards, photographs, county records (1890 to 1910), personal and business correspondence, railroad ferry boat logbooks, and more.
