The Past, Present, and Future of St. Ignace

St. Ignace is a town with deep historical roots. In 2022, one of its most significant figures returned home. Father Jacques Marquette, the Jesuit missionary who founded modern St. Ignace in 1671, was originally buried here but had been moved over the centuries. After a reinterment ceremony, Father Marquette now rests once again in the town he helped to establish.

St. Ignace’s renewed connection to its past is sparking a cultural revival of sorts: the treasured historical collections that were once housed in the Fort de Buade Museum are currently being relocated to the soon-to-open Straits Cultural Center. And it doesn’t stop there—plans are underway to restore the town’s historic movie theater, promising a nostalgic experience for locals and visitors alike.

New Journeys: Arnold Transit

For over a century, Arnold Transit Company was an integral part of St. Ignace’s history. They ferried passengers to Mackinac Island from St.Ignace ever since 1878. Today, Arnold is back in St.Ignace, once again offering ferry rides to Mackinac Island. Step aboard, feel the refreshing lake breeze, and let the journey become part of your adventure! Arnold Transit is one of two ferry companies providing service across the Straits, alongside Shepler’s, both with regular trips between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island.
