Bite-sized Bliss: St. Ignace’s best Quick Eats

Food on the Fly for Hungry Travelers

Ever notice how your stomach starts rumbling the second you hit the north side of the Mackinac Bridge? It’s safe to say that we have all been there a time or two! The good news for Michigan travelers is that St. Ignace lies on the other side, where awaits totally tantalizing treats, able to satisfy every one of those road trip cravings.

If you know where to look, St. Ignace is home to great food that will fill you up—and give you something to talk about for miles down the road. Whether it’s the retro charm of a classic drive-in, a feel-good stop at a local hot dog joint, or a quick bite of fresh-caught Great Lakes Fish, St. Ignace knows just how to feed you right, and right away. Stick around awhile, and we’ll let you in on a few of our top picks!

Classic Eats, Retro Feels

First up on our list is Clyde’s Drive-In, a long-time local favorite that’s been serving up burgers and shakes since 1949! It’s one of the last true drive-ins around, and I’ll bet that your grandfather probably even ate here a time or two. When you arrive, simply pull up, order from the awesome menu, and then enjoy your meal right there—without ever leaving your car! We’re talking hearty, no-nonsense American fare here that is a throwback in the very best way possible.

If you’re feeling super hungry, grab a bison burger at Clyde’s—it’s a local favorite, and once you try it, you’ll know why! They are flavorful, juicy, and packed with the flavor you need for your Upper Peninsula adventure. If bison isn’t your thing, the pizza burger or taco burger offer something unique, or try a garden burger for a meat-free option. But if there’s one thing you absolutely cannot skip, it’s the shakes! Rumor has it they’re among the best in the Straits Area.

A few things to keep in mind: Clyde’s is cash or check only, so make sure to have some bills on hand. And while there’s no indoor seating, the shaded picnic area is perfect for a casual outdoor meal.

Dusty’s Dogs: Great Food and a Great Cause

If you find yourself wandering around downtown St. Ignace, seeking a fast nibble, tuck into Dusty’s Dogz, located right off State Street across from the Huron Boardwalk. Look for the funny hotdog statues right outside the door, and you’ve arrived! Dusty’s Dogz is an eatery with a mission. A portion of every sale goes to dog-related charities, helping local shelters and rescue organizations. As you bite into one of their Detroit dogs or tasty smash burgers, you can be satisfied knowing that you are also doing a bit of good.

The menu at Dusty’s is full of crowd-pleasers like chili cheese tots and classic hot dogs. For a bit of humor, the “yooper sushi” features a corn-dog, snappy ketchup drizzle, and a side of tater tots.

The dog-themed atmosphere also adds something special to the experience. You might even pick up some dog-themed merchandise while you’re there. We love Dusty’s Dogz because it is the kind of place that feels like home—even if you are just passing through.

Fresh, Local, and Flavorful

Last but certainly not least, there’s the St. Ignace Fish Trolley—a must-visit for all seafood lovers. The stand itself is a re-purposed trolley bus, with a cheery facade that beckons motorists with bright awnings and signs that promise fresh fish, prepared in a multitude of delicious ways. The Fish Trolley delivers a taste of the Great Lakes with fresh, locally-caught fish. So, if you’re in the mood for fish tacos, a whitefish gyro, or even some classic fish and chips, here’s your spot!

The fish here is always fresh, never frozen, and cooked to perfection! Folks rave about the light, crispy batter and delicious sauces. Cheese curds and poutine (consisting of French fries, beef gravy, and melty cheese curds) are just a few of the amazing side options. It’s a laid-back, no-fuss kind of place—perfect for grabbing a quick meal before scurrying off on your next adventure. Just a mile west of McDonald’s on US-2, the St. Ignace Fish Trolley is an easy stop that’s well worth it.
