Hit the frosty trails, hang out at the beach, or kick back at a pet-friendly city park. Read on for all the best dog-approved travel tips!
Tail-Wagging Hikes
It’s no secret that St. Ignace offers a lot of great trails, but did you know that many are also perfect for your dog? The non-motorized St. Ignace stretch of the North Country Trail (St. Ignace to Brevoort Lake) invites you to hike (or snowshoe!) through wooded landscapes that are simply spectacular.
For a more northerly route, try the multi-use St. Ignace to Trout Lake Trail, a 26-mile long trail that used to be a railroad route — just remember to watch for snowmobiles and other off-road vehicles that share the trail. For more information on both pathways, check out this cool map that features the best places to access both the Trout Lake Trail and the North Country Trail.

The Mackinac Bridge Overlook Trail has views of the Mackinac Bridge on an easy hike that is just under one mile.
For a nice winter’s drive, the Pine Bowl Pathway, located in nearby Kinross, is ideal for a peaceful walk, or for a snowshoeing adventure if there’s enough snow. Leashed dogs are welcome at Pine Bowl.
When you stay in St. Ignace, remember that Tahquamenon Falls State Park gets even better during the winter months. With nearly 50,000 acres of pet-friendly trails open year-round at Tahquamenon, there’s definitely a trail for you.
More Than a Just Walk in the Park
Looking for something a bit more exciting? Try skijoring! Skijoring is a unique winter sport that pairs a cross-country skier with a harnessed dog to glide across the snow. Choose one of St. Ignace’s noteworthy cross-country ski trails, then prepare for some serious fun.
When the snow accumulates, the Hiawatha National Forest or the Pine Bowl Pathway are great choices for either skijoring or snowshoeing — just don’t be surprised if the world around you suddenly looks like an actual winter wonderland!
