Mackinac Straits History Museum

The Mackinac Straits History Museum, operated by the Michilimackinac Historical Society, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of the Straits of Mackinac and surrounding Upper Peninsula communities. Through exhibits, educational programs, public archives, and special events, the organization brings thousands of years of local history to life, from Native American cultures and early French settlement to maritime heritage, railroads, and the people who shaped the region.

While the former Fort de Buade Museum is currently closed during its transition, the museum store remains open and the Historical Society continues to host programs, workshops, lectures, and community events throughout the year. Work is also underway on the future Straits Cultural Center, which will provide expanded exhibit space, interactive displays, educational programming, and a permanent home for the museum’s extensive collection of regional artifacts.
