Hiking and Biking
Hiking
With thousands of acres of forests and woodlands, hiking in the Upper Peninsula is everywhere! The Hiawatha National Forest is home to several routes including the North Country Trail and the Sand Dunes Trails. Wilderness preserves are to be found nearby at Horseshoe Bay via Foley Creek Campground. Choose your trail, get your boots on and take off!
Biking
Bicycling is a popular activity all around the area. Bikes are allowed on nearly all road systems except I-75 unless posted otherwise. Several bike loops around the area have been developed for day-trips ranging from 10 to 40 miles. Check out directions of the loops in the Word document below.
With no cars allowed on Mackinac Island, biking is the most common mode of transportation once you get there. Bikes are allowed on the ferry boats for a fee. Bicycle rentals are available at many outlets on the island and you can even get a tandem, the bicycle-built-for-two. See the listings at our "Mackinac Island - Getting There" page.
